Specialist eating disorder (ED) dietitians are an integral part of the team to help someone in their journey of recovering from an eating disorder. We work with multiple members of the team such as: ED practitioners who are trained in different therapies such as cognitive behavioural therapy or cognitive analytical therapy, as well as working with the consultant psychiatrists, mental health nurses, psychologists and other healthcare professionals who may be involved in a patients care.

CWP Adult ED Dietitians work across different locations including: Bolton, Cheshire east and west (including Macclesfield, Crewe and Leighton), Warrington and Halton and the Wirral.

We aim to support adults in developing a positive relationship with food, to ensure that they are physically and mentally well enough to do the things they want to in life.

Specialist Adult ED dietitians work in various ways, for example by:

  • Providing psychoeducation on:
    • The main food groups and their nutrients
    • What balanced eating may look like using the ‘food pyramid’
    • Appropriate portion sizes
    • Biological and psychological effects of disordered eating behaviours
  • Addressing food myths, misconceptions, and food rules to allow food freedom and flexibility.
  • Encouragement and support in challenging avoided foods as a result from disordered eating thoughts
  • Tailored guidance on adequate food and fluid intake for general good physical and mental health for present and in the future (i.e. fertility health, bone health or specific conditions such as coeliac disease)
  • Guidance and advice on what safe refeeding looks like after a period of dietary restriction.
  • Dietary recommendations of nutritional deficiencies identified from physical health checks or food monitoring diaries.
  • Sometimes a personalised meal plan would be created to help variety of meal and snack choices. If needed, this will be discussed within a dietetic session.
